Ice and Snow Spectacle
Winter has returned to Harbin! As a native of Northeast China, I truly understand the charm of the Ice City. The winter here is completely different from other places, with a unique ice and snow atmosphere in the air. Every winter, the entire city transforms into a massive ice and snow fairyland that takes your breath away!
This year's Ice and Snow World left me speechless with amazement. Did you know? In just 20 days from December 11-31, 2024, it attracted nearly 640,000 visitors. This isn't just a random number - it represents incredible underlying strength. When I went with my friends, we could feel the popularity just from the entrance queue, with tourists everywhere snapping photos with their cameras.
This year's Ice and Snow World, themed "Winter Dreams of Asia, Love Fills the Ice City," perfectly incorporates elements of the 2025 Asian Winter Games. The park covers 1 million square meters and used 300,000 cubic meters of ice and snow in its construction. These numbers might sound abstract, so let me put it in perspective: 1 million square meters is equivalent to 140 standard football fields, and 300,000 cubic meters of ice blocks could fill about 120 standard swimming pools! The park features countless ice sculptures, from traditional Chinese architecture to modern artistic designs, each a unique work of art.
Most impressive was the main tower, with ice pillars carved with the Olympic Council of Asia logo, gleaming in the sunlight. During the day, sunlight refracts through the ice in rainbow colors; at night, colorful LED lights illuminate the entire ice tower in a dreamlike display. My friends and I took countless beautiful photos under the main tower, and our social media posts were flooded with likes!
Besides the main tower, the park has many special attractions. There's a 300-meter ice slide that sends chilling winds across your face as you ride - so exciting! There's also the "Lake of Love" designed for couples, which lights up at night with pink heart-shaped lights reflecting on the ice surface, maximizing the romance factor. Oh, and they added a huge ice and snow maze this year with many clever mechanisms - my friends and I spent ages finding our way out, we just couldn't get enough!
The park has set up several popular photo spots. The most popular is the huge ice and snow castle, reportedly inspired by Disney animated films. Every detail on the castle walls is meticulously carved, with even the window patterns clearly visible. I struck many poses for photos in front of the castle, and every picture turned out incredibly beautiful!
To enhance visitors' ice and snow enjoyment, the park offers various interactive activities. There are ice bicycles that provide a unique riding experience, and ice bumper cars that both adults and children love. My favorite is the ice carousel - riding it makes you feel like you've entered a fairy tale world.
The park's dining facilities are also very thoughtful. There are shops selling milk tea and hot coffee everywhere, along with Northeast Chinese specialties. My favorite is the freshly made candied haws - the ice candy shell perfectly complements the sweet and sour hawthorn fruit. There's also the ice house hotpot - eating steaming hot pot in a room that's twenty degrees below zero creates an unforgettable contrast.
Smart Upgrades
You might wonder how such a large-scale ice and snow project was built? This year's construction employed high technology - multi-sensor data fusion technology and AI visual recognition systems. It's amazing to see traditional ice and snow art embracing artificial intelligence.
The entire park is equipped with intelligent monitoring systems that can monitor ice sculpture conditions in real-time. For instance, if a sculpture's temperature abnormally rises, the system immediately alerts staff for timely action to ensure the sculpture's integrity. These sensors also monitor visitor flow, automatically adjusting lighting and sound effects in different areas to keep the park's atmosphere dynamic.
The AI visual recognition system is even more impressive - it automatically recognizes visitors' expressions and behavior, adjusting park services based on data analysis. For example, if it detects visitors staying particularly long in one area, the system suggests adding seating or rest areas. This data is also used to optimize the park's layout and design, continually improving the visitor experience.
This year also added an AR guide system - I just need to point my phone at an ice sculpture to see detailed information about the work and even 3D animations of its creation process. It's like having a personal guide explaining everything, making the whole visit more interesting and informative.
The park's ticketing system has also been upgraded to fully support facial recognition entry. I bought tickets online in advance and could enter directly by "face scanning" when I arrived - super convenient. Another great feature is real-time crowding displays - you can see visitor density in different areas through a mobile app, helping avoid peak times for a more comfortable visit.
Convenient Transportation
When it comes to visiting Harbin, transportation is often a top concern. But by January 2025, Harbin Taiping International Airport's parking spaces will double, handling over 60 flights per hour. I love the airport's new electronic displays showing real-time ride-hailing information, including license plates and waiting times - no more worrying about finding your ride.
Getting from the airport to downtown is also very convenient, with a new airport express line going straight to the city center, complete with heating in the carriages. My most recent trip from the airport to downtown took less than 40 minutes - absolutely fantastic!
City public transport is also excellent. Subways and buses have special ice and snow season routes directly to various attractions. Stations thoughtfully provide heating equipment and enclosed waiting areas, so you won't feel cold while waiting. My favorite is the new "Ice and Snow Sightseeing Bus" with its ice-blue exterior - it's super attractive and stops at all of Harbin's most famous attractions.
Booming Accommodation
To understand how popular this year's ice and snow season is, just look at the accommodation data. In the first two weeks of December 2024, Harbin's hotel bookings increased by over 30% compared to the same period last year. Harbin firmly holds the top spot in winter tourism destination rankings across major online travel platforms.
The hotel I recently stayed at was particularly interesting - a boutique hotel with an ice and snow theme. The rooms featured ice-blue color schemes and snow-themed murals. Most special was the small ice sculpture exhibition area in the lobby, with different works displayed daily - it was like staying in a mini ice art gallery.
The hotel service was also very thoughtful. The front desk provided each guest with hand warmers and ear muffs, and detailed information about nearby attractions and cuisine. I especially loved the hotel breakfast, with traditional Northeast Chinese soybean paste soup, steaming xiaolongbao, and various hot porridges - perfect for winter.
However, room booking now requires advance planning. Hotel staff told me that many popular hotels were fully booked months in advance for the ice and snow festival period. It's especially difficult to find rooms near the Asian Winter Games time. It's recommended to book at least a month in advance to secure your preferred room.
National Trend
The ice and snow tourism fever isn't limited to Northeast China. Altay in Xinjiang, the birthplace of skiing, has introduced new activities this year including helicopter skiing and ski jumping, along with snowmobiling, snow tubing, and paragliding. Guess what? Even southern cities like Shenzhen have built indoor ice and snow entertainment centers, with one receiving 400,000 visitors in a single statistical period.
A friend of mine from Guangzhou flew specially to Harbin to experience ice and snow. She said that while southern indoor ice rinks are nice, they can't compare to Harbin's natural ice and snow environment. Here, just breathing the crisp air and seeing the city covered in ice and snow lifts your spirits.
While ice and snow industries are developing nationwide, Harbin's advantage lies in its unique ice and snow culture and long historical traditions. It offers world-class ice and snow art, unique Dongbei culture, and Russian influences that other places can't replicate.
Promising Future
The 2025 Asian Winter Games will be held in Harbin in February, with athletes from 34 National Olympic Committees competing. To welcome international visitors, Harbin's main attractions have added English signage and guide services. I believe this is not just a sporting event, but an excellent opportunity to showcase China's ice and snow tourism charm to the world.
The city's appearance is constantly updating. Central Street recently completed a renovation, preserving the historical features of century-old buildings while adding many modern facilities. The evening light show is particularly spectacular, transforming the entire street into an ocean of light and shadow. I especially love the new Russian-style cafes on the street - drinking hot chocolate while watching the snow fall outside is simply perfect!
The Songhua River area has also seen changes. A new observation walkway along the river has been installed with anti-slip materials and evening lights. Most interesting is the ice and snow park on the river surface, with ice bicycles, ice bumper cars, and dedicated ice fishing areas. When I visited last week, I saw many foreign tourists enjoying ice fishing, having a great time.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has specially launched 12 winter-themed tourism routes, showing the nation's emphasis on and support for ice and snow tourism. These routes include not just traditional attractions but many new ice and snow activities and cultural experiences. For example, one route specifically lets you experience Northeast Chinese New Year traditions, including making dumplings, putting up Spring Festival couplets, and visiting temple fairs, allowing tourists to truly experience Northeast folk culture.
Are you planning your ice and snow journey yet? As a seasoned "Ice City player," I recommend coming to Harbin this winter to experience its unique ice and snow charm. Trust me, it will be an unforgettable journey. You can experience a century of history on Central Street, enjoy a dreamlike ice and snow fairy tale at Ice and Snow World, experience exciting ice activities along the Songhua River, feel exotic charm in the Russian-style architecture district of Daoli, and taste authentic Northeast cuisine in the old Daowai market.
Whenever I think of Harbin's winter, I picture those crystal-clear ice sculptures, falling snowflakes, and steaming candied chestnuts on the street. This city's winter offers not just cold, but warmth; not just ice and snow, but human warmth. I hope everyone who comes here can feel the unique charm of this ice and snow city, leave with beautiful memories, and look forward to their next visit.
