First Encounter with the Ice City
I still remember my first trip to Harbin, which was my first real experience of "migrating north." As someone born and raised in the South, having lived in a warm and humid environment all my life, I always had endless fantasies about the ice and snow of the North. Finally, during last year's winter break, I made up my mind to experience the charm of the legendary "Ice City" firsthand.
When the plane slowly landed at Harbin Taiping International Airport, looking out through the window, the vast white world took my breath away. This whiteness wasn't like the occasional scattered snowflakes in the South, but rather an all-encompassing pure white blanket. The airport terminal was as warm as spring, with electronic screens displaying real-time taxi information and welcoming messages. This gave me, a southerner visiting a minus 20-degree city for the first time, an unexpected sense of warmth.
The moment I stepped out of the airport, the biting cold wind hit my face, feeling like countless tiny ice needles dancing on my skin. I wrapped my down jacket tighter, took a deep breath, experiencing the uniquely crisp northern air. Although the cold made me shiver, my heart was filled with excitement and anticipation. After all, this was the ice and snow city I had been dreaming of!
Unexpected Surprises
Looking back now, my timing for visiting Harbin was perfect. In recent years, Harbin's tourism industry has developed rapidly, with various supporting facilities becoming increasingly comprehensive. According to the latest market data, hotel bookings in Harbin have increased by over 50% year-on-year, reflecting people's growing enthusiasm for ice and snow tourism.
Even more surprising is that online travel platforms have seen search volumes for Harbin surge by three times! Particularly tourists from southern cities like Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou have shown "crazy" enthusiasm for ice and snow tourism. I remember meeting several tour groups from Guangzhou while waiting at the airport, all drawn to Harbin's ice and snow attractions.
This rising popularity isn't coincidental. In recent years, Harbin has invested heavily in tourism infrastructure. Not only have they opened multiple new air routes, but they've also introduced various convenient measures. For instance, you can now buy round-trip bus tickets to the city center directly at the airport, and there are dedicated volunteers providing consultation services for out-of-town tourists. These detailed changes have made the travel experience more comfortable and convenient.
Mastering Ice and Snow Activities
As a "veteran" who has visited three times, I must say that Harbin's ice and snow activities are truly eye-opening. The most impressive is the stunning Ice and Snow World, which is a must-visit attraction every year. This year's Ice and Snow World is even more spectacular than previous years, with expanded grounds and additional ice and snow slides.
I remember being amazed by the sight during my first visit. The Ice and Snow World is impressive during the day, but at night it transforms into another world entirely. Colorful lights illuminate the crystal-clear ice sculptures, making the entire park sparkle as if under a magic spell. Particularly the newly added "Aurora Night" themed area this year, which simulates the Northern Lights with lighting effects, makes you feel like you're in a fairy tale.
Besides viewing, interactive experiences are also a major feature of the Ice and Snow World. The park has set up multiple interactive zones, from simple ice slides to exciting ice bumper cars, allowing visitors to have endless fun. My personal favorite is the ice maze - although I often get lost, the experience of navigating through ice walls is incredibly fun.
This year also added a new "Ice and Snow Art Creation Zone" where visitors can create small ice sculptures under professional guidance. Although the finished works might not match professional ice sculptors' standards, the hands-on experience is truly memorable. I remember once spending two whole hours carving a crooked little penguin - though not perfect, that sense of achievement was irreplaceable.
In-Depth Experience
Speaking of ice and snow sports, we must mention professional ice and snow activities. For friends wanting a deeper experience, I strongly recommend trying ski jumping and terrain halfpipe. Although these activities require higher technical skills, beginners can gradually experience the thrill and joy of skiing under professional coaching.
I remember my first attempt at ski jumping - looking down from the height, my heart almost stopped. But after mastering basic techniques under the coach's guidance, the feeling of gliding through the air was amazing! Although I only tried the most basic jump, the sense of self-breakthrough was unforgettable.
For recreational players, helicopter skiing and snowmobiling are excellent choices. Helicopter skiing is a relatively new activity that has emerged in recent years, allowing you to experience skiing on pristine slopes. Imagine being dropped by helicopter at the top of an untouched snowy mountain, facing a field of powder snow - it's absolutely breathtaking!
Snowmobiling offers another thrilling experience. Driving a snowmobile across vast snowy plains, with the roar of the engine mixing with flying snow, gives an unprecedented sense of freedom and exhilaration. Many snow parks now offer nighttime snowmobile experiences, making riding under the starry sky even more memorable.
Surrounding Areas
Many tourists might focus on downtown Harbin, but nearby cities like Qiqihar and Yichun are equally worth visiting. These places have their own unique ice and snow attractions and activities, and with convenient transportation now available, you can easily arrange one or two days to experience them.
I especially recommend visiting Yichun. The pristine forests there, dressed in white snow, present a completely different beauty from Harbin's urban ice and snow. The spectacular views of the snow-covered forest are like something out of a fairy tale. Especially under sunlight, the snow on tree branches sparkles with crystalline brilliance, taking your breath away.
In Yichun, I also experienced snow hiking. Wearing professional snow gear, following a guide through the snow-covered forest. The snow crunches beneath your feet, surrounded by silence, occasionally spotting wildlife tracks. This kind of close-to-nature experience is impossible to find in the city.
The Zhalong Nature Reserve in Qiqihar is also worth visiting. Winter gives Zhalong a unique charm, where you can see rare red-crowned cranes foraging in the snow. The reserve has also developed special activities like ice bird watching and snow photography, allowing visitors to experience its beauty in different ways.
Practical Tips
As a travel blogger who frequently travels between the South and North, I understand southern friends' concerns about skiing. But there's no need to worry - many southern cities now have indoor ski facilities where you can practice basic movements beforehand.
Take Guangdong's indoor ski facilities for example - they've become important training grounds for "southern ice and snow enthusiasts." Though smaller than real ski resorts, these facilities are adequate for beginners to familiarize themselves with basic movements. I know several friends from Guangdong who had never seen snow before, but through practice at indoor ski facilities, they could smoothly ski on beginner slopes during their first visit to Harbin.
Regarding equipment, I suggest not buying too much professional gear at once. For your first visit, you can completely rely on local rental services. All major ski resorts in Harbin offer professional equipment rental services at reasonable prices. You can consider buying your own equipment after truly falling in love with the sport.
Additionally, choosing cold weather clothing is crucial. I recommend selecting lightweight but well-insulated down jackets that allow movement while maintaining body temperature. Make sure to bring hats, gloves, and scarves - especially windproof face masks, which are essential in temperatures below minus twenty degrees.
Future Prospects
The 9th Asian Winter Games will be held in Harbin in 2025, presenting an important opportunity for the entire city. To welcome this event, Harbin is comprehensively improving its urban services. The increase in English signage and improvement of guide services are making the city more international.
Particularly noteworthy is the implementation of the 144-hour transit visa-free policy, giving more international tourists the opportunity to experience China's unique ice and snow culture. During my last visit to the ski resort, I met several tourists from Southeast Asia who came because of this policy. Seeing their excited expressions upon first seeing snow reminded me of my own initial feelings when I first came to Harbin.
Following the successful hosting of the Winter Olympics, China's ice and snow industry has entered a period of rapid development. As an important ice and snow tourism destination in China, Harbin continues to improve its hardware facilities and service standards. New hotels and restaurants are constantly opening, and the transportation network keeps expanding. It's foreseeable that future Harbin will attract more tourists to experience ice and snow culture.
Trip Planning
The 12 premium ice and snow tourism routes recently released by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism provide excellent references for tourists. These routes cover multiple regions including Beijing, the three northeastern provinces, and Xinjiang, incorporating not only winter sports venues but also nature reserves, museums, and various festivals - they're quite comprehensive.
Taking Harbin as an example, I recommend planning at least a 5-day trip. The first day can be spent experiencing the city's charm, with Central Street's European architecture looking particularly beautiful against the snow. The second and third days can be spent experiencing different snow sports at various ski resorts. The fourth day can be arranged for visiting nearby Yichun or Qiqihar to experience different ice and snow landscapes. The last day can be spent at the Ice and Snow World, concluding the entire journey with a romantic ice and snow night.
For accommodation, I recommend staying near Central Street. This area has convenient transportation, numerous restaurants nearby, and you can experience Harbin's nightlife anytime. There are many hotel choices in this area now, from budget to luxury options, allowing you to choose according to your budget.
Final Thoughts
From initial curiosity about ice and snow to becoming an experienced ice and snow tourism enthusiast, this process has made me deeply appreciate the charm of ice and snow tourism. I remember being a complete "rookie" who couldn't ski at all during my first visit to Harbin, but now I can smoothly ski on intermediate slopes. The sense of achievement from this progress is irreplaceable by any other sport.
I believe that with the country's strong support for the ice and snow economy, more people will fall in love with ice and snow tourism in the future. Whether you're a young person seeking thrills or an office worker looking to relax, you can find suitable activities here. Harbin's ice and snow world always welcomes everyone who comes with dreams and passion.
After reading this guide, I wonder if you've already started planning your own ice and snow journey? Trust me, when you actually set foot on this ice and snow land, you'll definitely fall in love with it. Looking forward to meeting you, fellow ice and snow enthusiast, on the ski slopes!
