A Language Journey from Scratch: My First Japanese Lesson on the Streets of Japan

First Arrival

On a cool autumn evening, I stood at the bustling exit of Shinjuku Station, dragging my pink suitcase adorned with cherry blossom patterns. Before me were dense Japanese signs, and around me echoed Japanese announcements. Terms like "JR Line," "Yamanote Line," and "Chuo Line" that I thought I had memorized thoroughly had turned into a confusing blur. As the electronic display boards on the platform flashed unfamiliar characters, I pulled out my phone to check directions, only to realize I couldn't even recognize all the basic station names in kana.

Although I had confidently memorized dozens of Japanese words before departure and noted down plenty of travel phrases in my memo, when actually immersed in this foreign language environment, I felt like a toddler just learning to walk, taking each step with trepidation. The subway station was buzzing with voices, yet I felt isolated in a silent bubble, everything around me seeming distant and hazy.

The feeling was like diving into the deep sea for the first time, surrounded by floating seaweed and colorful fish - beautiful but somewhat overwhelming. However, it was this complete language immersion that gave me an incredible learning experience in the days that followed. Looking back now, the words and grammar I had painfully memorized in the classroom couldn't compare to the profound learning that came from real-world practice.

Language is Life

The first week in Japan was like having cheat codes activated. Each morning, opening the convenience store's glass door, I was greeted with "irasshaimase" (welcome) - the start of my daily language learning. At the counter, I had to say "onigiri" (rice ball) and "ocha" (tea) in Japanese; at vending machines, I needed to distinguish between "attakai" (hot) and "tsumetai" (cold); even buying a train ticket required confirming "katamichi" (one-way) or "ofuku" (round-trip) in Japanese.

I remember one night when I was completely lost in the bright streets of Shibuya. Amidst the neon lights, I couldn't find my way back despite looking at my phone map. After much hesitation, I finally gathered the courage to stop a passing businessman: "sumimasen, Shibuya eki wa doko desu ka?" (Excuse me, where is Shibuya Station?). My pronunciation must have been strange, and the word order probably wasn't quite right, but the suited gentleman immediately showed an understanding smile. He not only gave me directions in simple Japanese but also personally walked me to where I could see the station.

Ordering at izakayas often involved a small "battle" with the servers. "Kore wa nan desu ka?" (What is this?) "Karai desu ka?" (Is it spicy?) "Osusume wa?" (What do you recommend?) Each interaction was a practical exercise. Sometimes I would order dishes I didn't recognize at all, but this became an opportunity to learn about new things. The servers were always patient, explaining things to me in simple Japanese with accompanying gestures.

On the subway, I began to pay attention to the broadcast announcements. Words and phrases like "mamonaku" (shortly), "touchaku shimasu" (arriving), and "go chuui kudasai" (please be careful) naturally stuck in my memory after hearing them dozens of times. I even started to distinguish between different line announcers' voices, knowing which ones spoke particularly clearly and were good for learning pronunciation.

Learning New Techniques

As time passed, I gradually developed a learning method that suited me. Every night after returning to my accommodation, I would open my phone's memo app and record new words and expressions I had encountered that day. I didn't just make simple notes; I would also mark down the context and situations where they were used. For everyday phrases like "ittekimasu" (I'm leaving) and "tadaima" (I'm home), I would note down the circumstances in which I heard them and how others responded.

My memo app quickly became a personal Japanese dictionary. It contained not just convenience store phrases, but also subway announcements, restaurant ordering terms, and interesting expressions I happened to hear on the street. These were all living, practical Japanese phrases, much more vivid than the examples in textbooks.

My experience staying at a guesthouse in Osaka brought unexpected gains. I stayed in a traditional Japanese house with hosts who were a couple in their sixties. Every morning, the elderly lady would prepare a hearty Japanese breakfast and sit across from me, patiently teaching me table manners and daily expressions. The elderly gentleman enjoyed tending to his bonsai in the yard, occasionally teaching me plant names and care techniques.

They spoke slowly with standard pronunciation, perfect for beginners. More importantly, they would promptly correct my pronunciation and grammatical errors. For instance, when I struggled with the difference between "wa" and "ga," the elderly lady would explain using real-life examples: the difference between "watashi wa nihonjin desu" (I am Japanese) and "watashi ga nihonjin desu" (it is I who am Japanese). This immediate feedback led to noticeable improvement.
